Laura L. Karfeld, LCSW, OSW-C, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Board-Certified Oncology Social Worker with over four decades of experience serving individuals and families across medical, mental health, and community settings. Currently based in Cumming, Georgia, Laura has served as a Clinical Oncology Social Worker at Northside Hospital’s Atlanta Cancer Care since 2013. In this role, she conducts psychosocial assessments, provides individual and family counseling to oncology patients and their loved ones, facilitates support groups, and delivers community education on topics including depression, anxiety, and suicide prevention. She also leads staff training initiatives and connects patients and families to vital community resources.

Prior to her work in oncology, Laura served as a Hospice Social Worker from 2007 to 2013, where she provided compassionate counseling and care planning for patients and families across all stages of life—from neonate to geriatric. She also contributed to the Veterans Administration program certification and worked within interdisciplinary care teams to address complex psychosocial needs. Additionally, Laura worked as a community-based Family and Individual Therapist in Missouri, Washington State, and Georgia for almost three decades, providing therapy to at-risk children and families involved with the Department of Children and Family Services, and supervising Bachelor’s and Master’s level social work students.

Laura holds a Master of Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri (1986) and a Bachelor of Social Work from Southwest Missouri State University (1984). She is credentialed as an Advanced Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Social Worker (ACHP-SW) and a Board Certified Oncology Social Worker (OSW-C), and she holds a credential from the Academy of Certified Social Workers (ACSW). She is an active member of the Association of Oncology Social Work (AOSW), the Georgia Social Work Oncology Group (GA-SWOG), and the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). Laura’s career reflects a steadfast commitment to compassionate care, multidisciplinary collaboration, and advocacy for vulnerable populations.
